The Hidden Sun Sign

So, you’re a Taurus? Or a Capricorn? Or a Gemini? You’ve read the newspapers about your sign. Maybe you’ve even been to an astrologer. You know certain qualities associated with your sun sign. Maybe they seem right on OR maybe you’ve never understood why you don’t feel like “a typical Pisces.”

One of the reasons you may not feel like your sun sign is that the sun sign is only one very small part of the zodiacal picture. There are many planets and positions to consider to get a sense of the whole you. The Rising sign (or sign that was at the horizon) the moment you were born is very important as well as the position of the moon. For that matter, you may be a Pisces with 7 planets in Aquarius. Believe me, you’ll certainly feel the Aquarius energy more than the lonely sun in Pisces.

However, were we to focus solely on the sun and ask ourselves why we may not feel like our sun sign, the answer could be quite simple. We need to consider the sign OPPOSITE the sun in equal measure.

The sign opposite our sun sign could be considered our inner self. It’s the energy that wants to express to help us grow into a greater sense of wholeness. It’s the energy we want to invoke to bring greater balance to our lives. If we are shining in a particular sun sign, the sign opposite the sun is like the power behind the throne. It offers its gifts quietly. It whispers in our ear. It may even be the area where we give our greatest gift– where we make the strongest impact. That is, we may use the energy of our sun to give the gift of the opposite sign.

Before proceeding further, here are the oppositions:

Aries – Libra

Taurus- Scorpio

Gemini- Sagittarius

Cancer- Capricorn

Leo – Aquarius

Virgo – Pisces

So, if you’re an Aries and FEEL like an Aries, the opportunity is for you to consciously invoke Libra. That is, if you are pioneering and single-minded and impulsive and love to journey alone, the energy of cooperation and partnership and the ability to weigh something before acting might be very important to welcome into your life. The Aries Sun needs to hold out a hand to welcome relationship.

It’s possible, however, that you already feel very Libran even if you ARE an Aries. That is, you don’t “feel like a typical Aries.”  In this case, you’re showing up as the polar opposite sign and you may need to ask yourself if there are Aries qualities that you are avoiding because they seem “too much” or “unpleasant.” Sometimes we run to the extremes to avoid standing in the center of who we are.

But there is a third possibility. You might use your Aries courage and pioneering energy to promote the idea of Right Relationship. Your NEW BOLD IDEAS (Aries) might shine light on how to get along better (Libra). You might USE your Aries Sun to PROMOTE or EMBODY Libran ideals.

Let’s take a quick look at the other polarities and see what this third possibility might look like in each case.

Use your Taurus Sun (steadfastness, fixity and the appreciation of beauty) to promote depth and intimacy. Be steady as you dive into the dark and wrestle the dark into the light.

Use your Gemini Sun (flexibility, curiosity and intelligence) to make an impact in the realm of inspiration and forward movement.

Use your Cancer Sun (sensitivity, resourcefulness and inclusiveness) to achieve and strive for perfection.

Use your Leo Sun (courage, self expression and sense of authenticity) to empower and uplift group creativity.

Use your Virgo Sun (order, devotion, discrimination) to save and redeem, to work compassionately.

Use your Libra Sun (balance, social grace, fairness) to impact the beginnings of projects and relationships.

Use your Scorpio Sun (tenacity, depth and intensity) to promote beauty in the world.

Use your Sagittarius Sun (adventure, one-pointedness and inspiration) to help create relatedness and to expose the love that underlies everything.

Use your Capricorn Sun (responsibility, discipline, achievement) to build a safe haven for sensitivity and the kinship of family.

Use your Aquarius Sun (objectivity, group creativity, authenticity) to promote each individual’s unique gift.

Use your Pisces Sun (compassion, sensitivity and flow) to concretely support building a temple for the sacred.

This is just a start. Experiment with the gifts of the sign opposite your sun. We often end up married or in intimate partnership with people in the sign opposite our sun. Surely this is an indication that we’re looking for that particular energy in our lives. Perhaps we can marry it in ourselves FIRST allowing for a greater wholeness and a full range of quality as we offer our gifts in the world.
